What is Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM)?

Traditional Chinese Medicine is a system of health care with a history stretching back thousands of years. It includes acupuncture, bodywork such as massage and cupping, dietary guidance and herbal medicine. Rather than looking at one symptom in isolation, TCM looks at the whole person: sleep, digestion, stress, energy, emotions and lifestyle.

In TCM theory, health is understood in terms of the smooth flow of Qi (vital energy) and blood through the body. Practitioners use pulse and tongue assessment, along with a detailed conversation, to build a picture of how you're doing overall.

Acupuncture in Carlton

Acupuncture uses fine, sterile, single-use needles placed at specific points on the body. Many people book acupuncture for muscle and joint tension, headaches, stress, digestive comfort, cycle-related concerns or general wellbeing.

At Carlton Massage TCM, I draw on my Bachelor of Health Science (Acupuncture), my training in Japanese-style Kiiko Matsumoto acupuncture and a nervous-system-informed approach, as well as my personal experience overcoming my own health challenges through consistent acupuncture care.

Massage Therapy in Carlton

Not all massage is the same, so here is a simple way to choose what you need:

  • Relaxation massage: a slower, flowing massage for winding down and taking time out.

  • Remedial or clinical massage: a more focused treatment for areas of tightness, postural strain or tension from training or desk work. Private health rebates may apply for eligible remedial massage.

  • Cupping: a traditional TCM technique using gentle suction on the skin, often combined with massage. It can leave temporary circular marks that usually fade within a few days.

Many clients combine massage with acupuncture for a fuller session, and it's a popular choice for people who feel stiff from long days at a desk or regular exercise.

Lymphatic Drainage Massage in Carlton

Lymphatic drainage is a very gentle, slow, light-touch massage that follows the body's lymphatic pathways. Many people choose it when they feel puffy, heavy or sluggish, after travel, or simply as a soft alternative to deeper massage. It's calming and relaxing, and often chosen as regular self-care.

Lymphatic drainage isn't suitable for everyone, so please tell me about any health conditions, recent surgery or medications when you book.

Natural Health: Looking After Your Body Day to Day

In TCM, daily habits matter as much as treatment. Simple routines can support how you feel between sessions:

  • Favour warm, cooked meals over cold and raw foods, particularly in cooler months

  • Eat slowly and at regular times

  • Take a gentle walk after meals

  • Move regularly if you sit for long periods

  • Prioritise rest and time to unwind

At your visit, I'm happy to share simple, practical suggestions that fit your lifestyle. These are general wellbeing ideas, and inspired by my studies in health science & TCM.
