Acupuncture Melbourne — What It Is, What to Expect and Who It's For

If you've been searching for acupuncture in Melbourne — whether for back pain, neck pain, stress or general wellbeing — this guide covers what you need to know. Hi! I'm Holly Gosnell, an AHPRA-registered acupuncturist and TCM practitioner based in Carlton, and I see clients from across Melbourne's inner north and CBD for these types of presentations.

What Is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is a core modality of Traditional Chinese Medicine — a system of healthcare refined over thousands of years and supported by a growing body of clinical research.

It involves the gentle insertion of fine, sterile needles at specific points on the body. From a biomedical perspective, acupuncture stimulates the nervous system, promotes local circulation, modulates inflammation and supports the release of endogenous pain-relieving compounds. Most people find it deeply relaxing — and over a course of treatment, clinically meaningful for the condition being addressed.

What Can Acupuncture Help With?

Back pain and neck pain Acupuncture addresses both the local muscular component and the underlying patterns contributing to pain. Research supports its use for chronic low back pain, neck stiffness and musculoskeletal presentations. Many clients notice improvement within a small number of sessions, with sustained results over a course of treatment.

Stress and nervous system regulation Acupuncture has a well-documented effect on the autonomic nervous system — supporting a shift from sympathetic activation toward parasympathetic rest and recovery. For people managing chronic stress, anxiety or burnout, this can be one of the most effective tools available.

Headaches and migraines Acupuncture is well-researched for tension headaches and migraines, addressing muscular, vascular and hormonal contributing factors. In TCM, headaches are assessed according to their pattern — location, quality, timing and associated symptoms — allowing for a targeted treatment approach.

Women's health and hormonal concerns Acupuncture and TCM have a strong clinical tradition in women's health — supporting menstrual regularity, premenstrual symptoms, fertility, and perimenopausal presentations. Treatment is tailored to the individual's constitution and current clinical picture.

Digestive health In TCM, digestive function is central to overall health. Acupuncture and nutritional guidance can support presentations including bloating, IBS, reflux and sluggish digestion — addressing the underlying pattern alongside the presenting symptom.

Fatigue and energy Persistent fatigue that doesn't resolve with rest is a common TCM presentation. Acupuncture and herbal medicine work to address contributing factors and support sustained energy over time.

Sleep Acupuncture supports sleep quality by regulating the nervous system and addressing the underlying patterns contributing to difficulty falling or staying asleep.

What Does a TCM Consultation Involve?

Your first appointment begins with a thorough health intake covering your main concern, sleep, digestion, energy, stress and relevant health history. TCM diagnosis also involves tongue and pulse assessment — two established diagnostic tools that provide a detailed picture of your internal health.

Treatment follows the intake and is tailored to your individual presentation. Initial appointments run for approximately 60–75 minutes. Most people find acupuncture deeply relaxing — it is not uncommon to fall asleep during treatment.

How Many Sessions Are Needed?

This depends on your presentation and how long it has been present.

For acute conditions — a recent injury or short-term stress — 3–6 sessions is often sufficient for meaningful results.

For chronic or longstanding conditions — ongoing back pain, hormonal imbalance, persistent fatigue — a course of 8–12 sessions is typically recommended, with monthly or seasonal maintenance thereafter.

This is discussed at your first appointment so you have a clear picture of what to expect.
