Acupuncture Carlton Melbourne — What to Expect at Your First Session

If you've been curious about acupuncture but aren't quite sure what happens when you actually walk through the door, this is for you. First sessions are often nothing like people expect — and usually in a good way.

Before You Arrive

You'll complete a health intake form before your appointment covering your current health concerns, medical history, lifestyle and goals. This isn't just admin — it's the foundation of your treatment.

Wear comfortable, loose clothing if possible. Depending on your treatment, your practitioner may need access to your arms, legs or lower back.

Your Initial Assessment

Your first session at Carlton Massage begins with a thorough TCM assessment — this is what sets acupuncture apart from a generic wellness treatment.

Your practitioner will ask detailed questions about your main concerns, sleep, digestion, energy, stress levels and menstrual health if relevant. Two additional diagnostic tools are used that might surprise you:

Tongue diagnosis — the tongue is a reliable map of internal health in TCM. Its colour, coating, shape and moisture all provide clinical information that informs your treatment.

Pulse diagnosis — your pulse is assessed at three positions on each wrist, each corresponding to different organ systems. It gives your practitioner real-time information about what's happening internally.

This assessment takes around 15–20 minutes and directly determines which acupuncture points are selected for your treatment.

The Treatment Itself

Acupuncture needles are extremely fine — significantly thinner than a standard injection needle. Most people feel little to nothing upon insertion. Some points produce a dull, heavy or tingling sensation known in TCM as "de qi" — this is a normal and positive sign that the point has been activated.

Once needles are in place you'll rest for 20–30 minutes. Most people find this the most relaxing part of their week. It's common to feel deeply calm, sleepy or even euphoric during and after treatment — this is your nervous system responding.

Your practitioner may also incorporate cupping, gua sha or targeted massage depending on your presentation and what your body needs on the day.

After Your Session

It's normal to feel deeply relaxed, a little tired or mildly tender at needle sites after your first session. Drink plenty of water, avoid alcohol and try not to rush back into a high-output afternoon if you can help it.

Some people notice changes immediately. For others it takes two or three sessions before shifts become obvious — this is completely normal and expected. Acupuncture is cumulative, meaning the effects build with consistent treatment rather than being a one-off fix.
